Africa Deluxe Tours Sunset at Qolora Mouth

Qolora Mouth

Qolora Mouth is a small hamlet a short distance north of the Kei River on South Africa’s ‘Wild Coast’. It features two small country hotels and a small traditional village. Qolora Mouth lies next to the Qolora Lagoon, is fronted by sandy beaches while green Transkei hills serve as backdrop.

While the Trennery’s and Seagulls Hotels offer country-style rural hospitality, the iKhamanga Cultural Village offer basic accommodation and/or an introduction to Xhosa culture - whether you stay at the Village or one of the two hotels.

As is typical of the Wild Coast the shoreline feature sandy beaches, where it’s not uncommon to encounter a herd of Nguni cattle, as well as seaside cliffs. The Wild Coast lies squarely in the Transkei, home mainly to the isiXhosa people. The hillsides are dotted with rural homesteads - often featuring traditional circular and thatched rondavels and cattle kraals. It’s truly off the beaten track and an ideal getaway from modern city life.

Qolora Mouth is also believed to be in the vicinity of the pool of Nongqawuse, a Xhosa prophetess whose prophecies led to a millennialist movement that culminated in the Xhosa cattle-killing movement and famine of 1856-7, in what is now the Eastern Cape.
