"No
easy road to freedom" was a central theme in most
of the Mass Democratic Movement's campaigns, from the
early days through to the late 1980's. The Movement brought
together a variety of groups who opposed apartheid in the
absence of banned political parties such as the ANC.
Any
understanding of present day conditions in South
Africa* is greatly enhanced by looking at past injustice,
the legacy of the struggle and the promise of reconstruction
and development initiatives under way at present. Freedom
has not come easy.
By
virtue of its variety of sites and sights, this tour offers
a wealth of insight into South African history. This includes
a brief educational introduction to Cape
Town*, one of the world's most varied and sought-after
cities.

You will have the
opportunity to talk to people, visit them in their homes and,
if time allows, take some refreshment at a small township shop
("spaza") or a tavern ("shebeen").
The Bo-Kaap
A
look at the picturesque "Malay Quarter" and its dynamic
museum. We discover the unique culture, lifestyle and personality
of the Cape Muslim community and their contribution to South
Africa's* development.
The
Malay were originally shipped into the Colony of the Cape as skilled
artisan slaves. Later on they achieved their liberty and were
awarded an area for settlement where they still reside today.
It is referred to as the Bo-Kaap.
This mostly Afrikaans
speaking Muslim community is today best known for their colourful
houses and the annual music dance troupe competition and parade
through the city. They had a big influence on the development
of the Afrikaans language which has its roots in Dutch but picked
up words from among others the Malay.

District
Six
As
a result of the apartheid era Group Areas Act, 60 000 Capetonian
families were forcibly removed from this once vibrant ghetto
area between 1966 and 1982. The District Six issue remains
crucial.
We examine the
now desolate area, Zonnebloem, which was District Six and
visit the living museum (formerly the "Freedom Church")
which attempts to represent and recapture District Six in
various ways - as a fine spun tapestry of communal life torn
apart but not forgotten.
Our visit to
District Six will bring life to what appears to be an empty
piece of land for the uninitiated.
|

"Remember the thousands of people who lived for generations
in District Six and were forced by law to leave their homes
because of the colour of their skins..."

The
Townships and Cape Flats
Seeking
racial segregation, apartheid policies disrupted all non-white population
groups, distorted both rural and urban development and ensured hopeless
overcrowding. Few houses were built.
Sprawling satellite
camps of seemingly endless shanties - makeshift structures of corrugated
iron and other materials - provide little more than a roof and some
shelter. Today, as we shall see, squatter settlements are seeking
their own solutions as an economic necessity.
Against
all odds, township life prevails, in all its nuances. Langa is Cape
Town's* oldest formal black township. We visit the children
at the Chris Hani Literacy School. During Stage One of the relocation
of coloured people forcibly removed from District Six, people were
moved to the formal townships of Bontheuwel and Heideveld.
We drive through the
well-known areas of Guguletu, Nyanga and Crossroads. The sheer scale
of the informal housing problem becomes evident. Mitchell's Plain
is where many coloured people removed from District Six ("Stage
2") were moved to. At present it is home to ±350 000
people.
The Samora Machel Housing Development Scheme offers a first hand
view of the government's Reconstruction and Development Program
(RDP). We witness the work in progress as hundreds of squatters,
with the help of state grants, are setting about building their
own brick homes. We also visit the scheme's "container school".
