Cellar tour, wine
lecture & tasting
Probably
the highlight of the day. Equally enjoyable for wine connoisseurs
and wine illiterates. At either Nederburg, KWV or Bergkelder (all
leading estates) you'll be introduced to the process of wine making.
This includes a cellar tour where you'll be able to smell and
see what goes into producing good wine.
The
cherry on the top is the tasting session where you get to sample
a selection of the estate's wines under the guidance of someone
who knows his/her wines. You'll be told what to look for in the
colour/body, aroma/nose and taste/palate of the wine. Afterwards
you'll have the opportunity to buy some of the wines, so remember
to keep some space open in your suitcase! All in all a very enjoyable
and educational experience.
Franschoek &
second tasting at Mont Rochelle
Franschoek
is Dutch/ Afrikaans for "the French Corner". This small
village's history is that of the French Huguenots who fled France
in 1680 after being persecuted for their Protestant faith.
Although the Cape
already had some vineyards at the time the French brought their
superior knowledge and experience to the Cape Wine industry and
enriched it tremendously. At
the end of the village's main road stands the impressive French
Huguenot Monument and Museum. We visit the Monument and explore
the small town. We also fit in an all important second wine
tasting*!
The Afrikaans
Language Monument
Located
on the scenic Paarl Mountain the Afrikaans Language Monument is
noticed from far away. This impressive monument tells the story
of a European language that was brought to Africa by the first
white pioneers to settle here and that in time evolved into a
uniquely African language. With its roots in Dutch modern day
Afrikaans carries with it the influences of French, German, Malay,
Khoi and other African Languages. The Monument represents this
interesting history in a captivating visual form.
Stellenbosch
Stellenbosch*
is the second oldest town in South
Africa*. It is in the centre
of an important wine region and in it you will find some of the
oldest architecture in modern South
Africa*.
It
is also a student town. With its oak lined streets and peaceful
atmosphere it is easy to understand why students love it so much.
The town is alive with history and a wide variety of museums and
other attractions are mostly within easy walking distance from
each other.
