Witbank is a mining town in the extreme western part of Mpumalanga Province, South Africa. The town's name is Afrikaans for "White Ridge". It got its name from an outcrop of white sandstone where wagon transport drivers rested in earlier times, before the Pretoria - Maputo railway line was completed in 1892.

Witbank's location next to the new railway line, and near to rich coal and iron reserves, later lead to a permanent settlement. It was proclaimed a town in 1903 and became a municipality in 1914. The town relies heavily on mining and is industrial in nature. In our view its most valuable asset to tourists is a one-stop filling station / convenience store / restaurant complex on the N4 highway just outside of town. Another attraction is the small Ridge Hotel, Casino & Entertainment Resort just off the N4 enroute to the above mentioned one-stop. However, there are much larger casinos elsewhere in Southern Africa.

Witbank is not a great tourist destination and we would not recommend that you spend too much time there.
