White River - |
|
White River gets
its name from the river that flows through it called Mhlopemanza, Shangaan
for "white waters". The
first white pioneer farmers arrived in the area in the 1880's. After the
Anglo Boer War (1899-1902) the then British Governor of the Cape Colony,
Lord Milner, established an agricultural settlement in the area to assist
unemployed war veterans. The project was no great success and the land was
eventually sold to local farmers and businessmen who started pine plantations
and citrus orchards on it. Today the town's surrounds are still characterised
by orchards and huge pine and banana plantations.
White River's biggest attraction for tourists is its geographical location close to the Kruger National Park and other Mpumalanga attractions including the Panorama Route. It is a good base from which to explore these attractions, either on a self-drive basis or by enrolling on guided day tours or excursions. The town is also the base of Balloons Over Africa, a tour operator who offers hot air balloon rides in Mpumalanga and Limpopo. While the central business district of White River is not very appealing there are some very attractive hotels and lodges just outside of town including: Greenway Woods (Golf Hotel), Pinelake Inn and Cybele Forest Lodge.
