![]() Swaziland,
located in Southern Africa,
is home to the siSwati-speaking Swazi
nation. It was a British protectorate from 1906 until its full independence
in 1968. It is a small landlocked kingdom of less than one million people,
bordered by South Africa on three
sides and Mozambique to the east. Known as the "mountain kingdom"
Swaziland remains one of the world’s few absolute monarchies. King
Mswati III, educated at one of Britain’s elite colleges, regularly
appears in the country’s sacred festivities, adorned in the leopard
skins of his office, participating in ritual dance and ceremonies. The country
spans a choice portion of Southern Africa’s high veld’s descent
into the eastern lowveld and is blessed with easily accessible areas of
great natural beauty.
It is a very popular destination with South African hikers because of the natural beauty of the Swaziland's nature reserves and the country's close proximity to Gauteng. More commercial, but very popular, tourist attractions include Swazi Candles, Mantenga Craft Centre, Mantenga Swazi Cultural Village and Ngwenya Glass Works.
