- St. Lucia (town &) Estuary -
The Santa Lucia boat cruise on the St. Lucia Estuary
The Santa Lucia cruising the St. Lucia Estuary.
Map showing St. Lucia's location in South Africa (click for South African map and info)St. Lucia is a small town, which lies next to the St. Lucia Estuary within the Greater St. Lucia Wetland Park in KwaZulu-Natal. The estuary connects Lake St. Lucia to the Indian Ocean. The town is a haven for fisherman and during South Africa's holiday seasons and summer weekends it literally swarms with pick-up trucks and fishing rods. St. Lucia shorelineDuring the rest of the year it’s a rustic hideaway and great base from which to explore the Estuary and sandy beaches. If you love to really get away from it all you may also consider nearby Cape Vidal (32km up the coast accessed via St. Lucia).

The estuary was named Santa Lucia by Portuguese explorers who first reached it in 1576. Today Santa Lucia is the name of the Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife boat that operates 1.5-hour cruises on the Estuary three to four times a day. One or two private operators offer similar cruises. You'll get to see lots and lots of hippos, some crocodiles, various water birds and often African Fish Eagle. If you only have limited time to spend in town we suggest that you opt for this activity.

Crocodile feedingThe town is also home to the St. Lucia Crocodile Centre. Originally established to help replenish the crocodile population of Lake St. Lucia and its estuary it now also fulfils an educational function. Visitors to the centre can view all the African species of crocodiles, a wide variety of snakes, other animals found along the shores of the Lake and a host of other information about the area's ecology.

There's a short hiking trail along the shores of the estuary although caution should be taken due to the presence of crocodiles. Swimming in the lake and estuary is prohibited for the same reason. The town offers a large collection of middle class guesthouses and B&B's. There are also two Ezemvelo campsites.
