To make wine estates throughout South Africa more accessible to local and international tourists various producers and/or wine estates have established a host of wine routes in different wine producing regions of South Africa. Although they are called "routes", each route is in fact a collection of estates within easy reach of each other in the same geographical area. You will seldom be given a suggested route or an order in which to navigate them. Most information offices or websites connected to wine routes will provide you with a map indicating the various estates' location.

If you decide to explore one of these routes you'd be well advised to check on opening and closing times before setting out. Some estates are open seven days a week while others are only open on selected days of the week. Furthermore all estates do not offer the same opportunities. Some estates offer comprehensive programmes including guided wine tasting, cellar tours, onsite wine shops, private tastings, restaurants, etc. Other estates may only offer simple private tastings.
