Sea
World Durban is the city's medium-sized aquarium and dolphinarium. The facility
is centrally located on the popular Durban
beachfront and is open 7 days a week. During
its existence more than 14 million people have visited Sea World. Over the
years its staff has assisted and cared for more than 300 stranded, beached
or injured seals, penguins, turtles, dolphins and even the occasional whale
with a good percentage having being returned to their natural environment.
The aquarium displays a variety of sea life while the dolphinarium presents dolphin and seal demonstrations on a daily basis. Daily presentations at Sea World include fish and shark feeding, dolphin care and training and a dolphin, seal and penguin experience. All presentations are intended to both entertain and educate. Funds go towards marine research, education and stranded/ beached animal rehabilitation. The aquarium houses 210 Species and 1200 individual animals. The dolphinarium is home to 10 bottlenose dolphins (eight of which were born at Sea World), nine cape fur seals and a colony of African penguins. 4.5 Million litres of seawater are needed to keep Sea Worlds various holding tanks topped up.
