The very impressive twelve-storey Sandton Convention Centre (SCC) was completed at the turn of the millennium. It introduced to Sandton (north of Johannesburg) a world class venue for conventions, exhibitions and special events. In 2002 the UN World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) was hosted at the SCC. The WSSD, which takes place once every ten years, is one of the largest summit-meetings in the world and attracted tens of thousands of delegates from across the globe, including heads of state and other VIP's. The SCC is in close proximity to a wide range of 3 to 5 star hotels, guesthouses and B&B's. It is also within easy walking distance of the Nelson Mandela Square and Sandton City Shopping Centres.

The SCC has been designed to provide scalable space options combining double and triple-volume use of interior space in its main and public areas, with smaller and more intimate break-away meeting rooms and galleries on its mezzanine levels. A comprehensive range of modern presentation technologies are catered for. There are 26 escalators to accommodate an unhindered flow of large numbers of peoples. The main foyer and various meeting rooms lets in day/night light through the building's glass facade. The building is accessible to disabled visitors.
