The Playhouse
Theatre is a prominent landmark in central Durban.
While the Tudor facade of the building seems a little odd in an African
city it is true to the English colonial era, which lead to the establishment
of the city in the 1820's. The
Theatre is the prime venue for performance arts in KwaZulu-Natal
and is home to the independent Playhouse Company and the Puppet Company.
The theatre complex was created from two existing entertainment complexes – the old Princes Theatre Cinema, which dates back to 1926, and the Playhouse from 1935. Within the Playhouse Complex are several theatres. Between them they host major dance (contemporary & classic) and orchestra seasons, full-scale musicals, dramas, experimental and community-based theatre. Both eclectic classical European and contemporary South African productions are staged. Africa Deluxe Tours gladly arranges tickets and transport to performances when requested to do so by clients.
