The Ngwenya Glass
Works in the Kingdom of Swaziland
takes its name from the mountains, which forms the backdrop to this small,
yet very successful, recycled glass factory. "Ngwenya" is the
siSwati name for "crocodile".
At the glass works a small group of Swazi
craftsmen and women - with age old artistry - breath life into enchanting
interpretations of the animals and birds of Africa, imbuing each with its
own irresistible personality. Visitors get to witness the art of glassblowing
from an overhead balcony as the craftsmen and woman go about their daily
jobs. Each
item is handmade from 100 % recycled glass. An adjoining showroom serves
as a factory shop for visitors who want to purchase some of these unique
pieces. A small coffee shop rounds
of the experience.
Since its rebirth in 1987, Ngwenya Glass has been more than an inspiring success story. It is an environmentalist's dream. The products, which include a range of tableware, drinking glasses, vases, jugs and ornamental African animals, are all produced from recycled glass - mostly from soft drink bottles gathered from all over Swaziland. The collection of bottles helps to fight pollution of the environment. Ngwenya Glass also works with the local schools to instill in the children a sense of environmental awareness. Ngwenya Glass has expanded to South Africa where it opened a sister factory, called Shades of Ngwenya outside Johannesburg. In 1996 it opened the first Ngwenya Glass Boutique in the hub of the exclusive V&A Waterfront in Cape Town. |
