- Mpumalanga Highveld -

The Highveld actually includes large parts of Gauteng, such as Johannesburg (1800m above sea-level). Mpumalanga Highveld refers to that section of the Highveld that falls within the boundaries of the province of Mpumalanga.Map indicating the Highveld's location in South Africa, click here for more info on Mpumalanga Province. It includes the towns of Witbank, Belfast, Dullstroom and Lydenburg. The "veld" bit in Highveld is Afrikaans for "field". Geographically South Africa consists mainly of a large interior (elevated) plato, a often mountainous escarpment and a coastal plane that stretches all along the country's eastern and western flanks.

The term Highveld refers to the highest sections of the plato which are generally between 1700m and 2200m above sea level. The Mpumalanga Highveld is mostly open savannah (grass lands). Some areas are flat but as you approach Dullstroom and Lydenburg the topography gets hilly. Beyond that you are getting closer to the escarpment and the terrain starts getting mountainous.
