The Long Tom Pass in Mpumalanga links the Highveld town of Lydenburg to the escarpment town of Sabie, its highest point is 2 150m above sea-level. The old pass, constructed with pick and shovel by human labour was first used in 1874. In the final stages of the Anglo Boer War a commando of the Boer forces, in September 1900, was retreating before an advancing British Army contingent over the pass. It was treacherous going and they had no choice but to blow up and dump some of their trusty Long Tom cannons, which was slowing them down. It was an important turn of events as the cannons have proven to be very effective on the battlefield. Replica's of these cannons are displayed at a viewpoint next to the pass. The present day pass was christened Long Tom Pass and opened in 1953. It was tarred in 1964.
