The Local History
Museum is located in central Durban (KwaZulu-Natal)
and housed within a National Monument - the
old court house. The Court House Building
was old Durban's first two storey building
and was completed in 1866.
The small Local History Museum contains
various artifacts from the regions early colonial history. It includes
clothing and uniforms together with traditional Zulu
dress from the era. There's a small but fascinating display of model ships
representing sailing ships from the 1800's. Reconstructions of the first
European dwelling in Durban and a Victorian
chemistry can also be viewed. The Museum also has a very informative collection on Mohandas Ghandi consisting of artifacts (mostly photographs) and documents (including letters written by him). Ghandi lived in South Africa for 21 years. His ideology of peaceful protest and public disobedience, which would later be used to gain India's independence from Britain, was born from discrimination he was subjected to while living in South Africa. The collection is mostly exhibited in its main facility in the old courthouse.
