- The Gateway Shopping Centre -
Overview
With over 370 shops, Gateway near Umhlanga Rocks - Durban, is one of the biggest shopping centres in South Africa. Gateway is located on the edge of Umhlanga Rocks, click here for more info on the town.The centre, which opened in 2001, is located next to the N2 Highway, a 5-minute drive from Umhlanga Rocks proper and 20-minutes from Durban.

Gateway offers worthwhile attractions for young and old. It features outlets from all the major South African retail chains, as well boutiques and niche stores. It has excellent bookshops, restaurants and coffee shops. The centre have two movie houses (one large mainstream with 18 theatres and a second smaller Cinema Art Nouveau cineplex), an IMAX theatre as well as the Barnyard Theatre for stage productions.

A special feature of Gateway is its focus on high-energy sport facilities with a huge 24m-high indoor rock climbing wall, a skate boarding park, basketball courts and a very popular outdoor wave machine. Other facilities that may be of use to tourists include banks, foreign exchange outlets, jewellers, pharmacies and a post office. Ample parking is available on the premises.

  • Book shops & news agencies: CNA (Central News Agency, includes foreign newspapers), Exclusive Books (browse through books or magazines in adjoining coffee shop)
  • Restaurants & coffee shops: Primi Piatti (great alternative interior design and comfort); House of Coffee (wide selection of coffees and complementing menu), Mugg & Bean (bottomless coffees, food portions are huge); MacRib (great ribs, steaks, etc.); Nando's (spicy portuguese style chicken); News Café (relaxed atmosphere, bar and restaurant with great ziva's and complimentary news papers); Ocean Basket (affordable simple seafood); Spur (American styled family restaurant) and Panarotti`s (pasta restaurant)
  • Haircare, health & beauty: Carlton Hair International, Healthy Life
  • Luggage: Coachman, Frasers
  • Safari gear: Safari Centre, Cape Union Mart
  • Photo development: Foto First
  • Estate agents: Pam Golding Properties (leading estate agent for upmarket properties in South Africa)
  • Biltong: Biltong Galore, Biltong and Nut Bar
  • Indian spices: Gorima`s Spices
  • Fashion & clothes: There are a host of chain, boutique, sport-wear and brand-name shops - more than 50 in total. Our only tidbit of advice is Mr Price for really cheap clothing. If you are brand or fashion conscious put aside a couple of hours for browsing through what Gateway has to offer you.

The immediate surrounds of the shopping centre are mostly occupied by business parks. The Umhlanga Ridge City Lodge (economic limited service hotel) is located next-door to the shopping centre.
