Ezemvelo's core function is pure nature conservation, that is the management of KwaZulu-Natal's 110 formally protected areas as well as the application of nature conservation legislation in areas outside these protected areas. Scientific research forms an integral part of this function. Ezemvelo generates funding for this through eco-tourism, which incorporates many facilities, activities and projects. Amongst other things it has at its disposal 2 500 beds and camping capacity for 10 000 people in various protected areas. In the context of severe community empowerment needs in KwaZulu-Natal, a priority in the new South Africa, Ezemvelo has various empowerment and community participation programmes funded mostly through a community levy on entrance fees.
