Overview The viewing point at the highest point of the pass, and the views it provide, feature in countless photographs of tourists and professional photographers alike. It is also a perfect vantage point for whale-watching in season. The height of the vantage point helps one to see someway below the surface (on clear days) making it possible to see much more of a whale even if it's not surfacing. Sport events Safety & Toll Road In December 1999 a falling rock killed a Noordhoek resident driving along the road. After devastating fires on the Cape Peninsula in the following month, which also burnt the Chapman's Peak mountainside, the coastal drive became even more risky. This was because the fires destroyed most of the vegetation, which held much of the gravel and rocks on the mountainside in place. The loss of this vegetation resulted in various rock falls forcing the Western Cape Premier to close the road until such time that it could be made safe. A court case's ruling, in January 2000, in favour of a Bergvliet resident who ended up in a wheelchair after a 1994 rock-fall on the same road also forced the Premier's hand. After various tendering phases and much frustration from the tourism industry and Capetonians alike a successful bidder was appointed and the rehabilitation of Chapman's Peak Drive got underway. Almost four years later, at the end of 2003, the road re-opened to everyone's delight. To pay for the renovations to the drive and the continuous maintenance of the road and preventative measures Chapman's Peak Drive has been turned into a toll road. It now features half-tunneling and reinforced concrete canopies in places, as well as catch fences similar to those found on snow-laden mountainsides.
