At 50 storeys and 220m the Carlton Centre, completed in 1973, is the highest building in Johannesburg and Africa (apart from telecoms towers). It is located in Main Street, in the heart of the city.

The top floor, called Top of Africa, offers 360 degree views of downtown Johannesburg and surrounds. The bird's eye view provides the perfect opportunity to orientate yourself on how the city fits together, how built-up and densely populated some parts of the city are, and just how big the place is.
