Bourke's Luck Pot Holes
Visitors on a pedestrian bridge above some of the pot holes.

Bourke's Luck Pot Holes is a natural phenomenon at the source of the Blyde River Canyon in Mpumalanga, South Africa. Here, at the confluence of the Blyde and Treur Rivers, the force of the swirling waters, combined with pebbles and small rocks being washed around, has carved out large pot holes in the riverbed. Framed by sheer rock cliffs it is a beautiful sight.

The pot holes got its name from a prospector, one Bourke, who found alluvial gold here in the late 1800's. The site is managed by the Mpumalanga Parks Board and a nominal entrance fee applies. A 700m circular path, with pedestrian bridges over the river, will lead you to all the best vantage points. There's an information centre with exhibits on the natural history of the area as well as a brief introduction to the San who roamed this area some 20 000 years ago. Also see Panorama Route.
