The BAT Centre
The BAT Centre in Durban Harbour's Small Craft Harbour
The Bat Centre is located in Durban (click here for more info on the city)Established in 1995, the BAT Centre (BAT = Bartel Arts Trust) is Durban's largest and most innovative community arts centre. The centre's mission is "to support the development of a vibrant artistic practice which celebrates our rich cultural diversity, and builds respect for artists and their role within society". It provides the public with access to a range of arts-related activities and the opportunity to meet local artists face to face. Workshops and dance, art, music and writing classes are held on a regular basis. The Centre is located at the Small Craft Harbour - Victoria Embankment within Durban Harbour.

The very informal BAT Centre complex consists a Resource Centre (information centre); Mission Control (conference venue); Bayside Gallery (showcase for contemporary South African ceramics, original fine art prints and other upmarket craft); Part of Durban's BAT CentreBAT Shop (offers a comprehensive selection of African art and craft in particular from KwaZulu-Natal - includes contemporary paintings, prints, sculptures and pottery); Perspektive (New Age crystals, candles and dragons alongside traditional love beads, necklaces and artifacts); MacBat (computer hard and software - authorised Apple reseller); Funky's Restaurant and Bar (combines local cuisine and music, on Thursdays through to Sundays live bands -jazz / rock/ R&B / reggae); Intensive care Café (coffee-cum-juice bar and light snacks); OWN-KZN or Open Window Network KwaZulu-Natal (an NGO committed to the development of community video and television initiatives in KwaZulu-Natal, have set up several Community News Programming Units); Ikhaya Lendlamu Trust (a trust where cultural dance is promoted by establishing contacts for dance groups and also setting up workshops and other assistance for them).
