The Apple Express
first started operating out of Port
Elizabeth in 1903 and served the local farming community while operating
passenger trips during weekends. In
1946 the train was redesigned to transport apples from farms in the Langkloof
to the Port Elizabeth Harbour for export. From there the Train's unique
name. It fulfilled this function all the way up to 1993 at which time diesel
power took over. The
Apple Train survived as a tourist attraction running regular outings into
the countryside. A
very popular "Great Train Race" was also introduced where 10-person
teams race the train annually.
The operation and maintenance of the Train was taken care of by a group of dedicated volunteers. In time it proved an unviable model and the service came close to collapse on several occasions. In 2003 members of several sectors of society have decided to revive, revamp and remarket the operation. For this purpose a non profit organisation was formed, and is now known as the Port Elizabeth Apple Express (“PEAE”). After refurbishment and upgrading of station facilities the service is now stronger than ever. Today the Apple Express provides excitement to tourists and steam enthusiasts alike. Excursions, mostly to Thornhill are provided on scheduled days. The Apple Express is one of only two narrow gauge steam trains still operational in Southern Africa. It runs across the Van Stadens River Bridge built in 1904, the highest narrow gauge bridge in the world, which is approximately 77 metres (250 ft) high. The service also boasts one of the longest working narrow gauge tracks. Africa
Deluxe Tours will gladly book seats on the Apple Express for its clients
when their itineraries allow for
