Traditional dancers at Phezulu
Traditional Zulu dancers at Phezulu
Phezulu Safari Park is located a 30 min drive from downtown Durban in the direction of Pietermaritzburg (KwaZulu-Natal). Phezulu is located in the greater Durban area, for more on the city click here.It forms part of the popular Valley of 1000 Hills meander / route. The "park" is a combination of a reptile park, a Zulu cultural village, a restaurant and curious shop. It is worth a visit and fits nicely into a Durban regional day tour. However, there are more authentic and larger cultural villages and reptile parks elsewhere in South Africa if your itinerary allows.

The establishment is called a "park" because it was originally established as a reptile park. Two Zulu boysThe cultural village was added later and it should not be read into the name that people are in fact "exhibited" in the same way that Phezulu's animal species are. The Zulu nation is a very proud people and the cultural village offers a glimpse into their rich and complicated cultural life.

The low-key cultural village consists of a number of tribal, bee-hive shaped, Zulu huts, the traditionally dressed inhabitants thereof who follows more or less a traditional life style, performances by local tribal dancers and introductions to a sangoma (traditional healer). Phezulu's location is indeed in an area where Zulu culture still thrives. However, in order to make the traditional way of Zulu life accessible to visitors on short stops it is somewhat touristy. Crocodile at Phezulu Safari ParkThe village performs a short play at scheduled times of the day in which visitors are introduced to different aspects of Zulu culture and traditions.

The reptile park houses and displays a variety of species including crocodiles and snakes. PheZulu has also introduced its own "game bush drives" into the 1000 hills area. While it is home to some wild animals, the area is also rich in indigenous flora and shrubs that colour the hills.

A curios shop and the Imbizo Restaurant, which offers views onto the beautiful hills of the surrounding valleys, complete the Phezulu experience.
